Plant of the Day – Lycoris x houdyshelii

This surprise lily has been a great performer for us, blooming on naked stalks in late July and August. Lycoris xhoudyshelii is a natural hybrid from southeastern China between L. straminea and L. radiata var. pumila. Large pale, pale yellow flowers with ruffled edges and a blush of rose top the bare stalks in clusters of up to 7. Long, pink tinged stamens emerge from the center reminding me of huge, deciduous azalea blossoms. After flowering, strappy foliage emerges for the winter before the entire plant disappears until next July when the show begins again.
