South African bulbs are some of the most reliable and showiest garden plants for a well drained spot in the landscape. This very large species of pineapple lily, Eucomis pole-evansii, fits well into that category. Long strappy leaves form an posing rosette of foliage. In summer, tall spikes of white to greenish white flowers held in dense clusters and topped with a tuft of leaves resembling a pineapple are borne on sturdy scapes. E. pole-evansii seems to perform well in light shade or full sun. There can be considerable variation in seedlings with heights ranging from about 3′-5′, mottled flower stalks, and more or less wavy leaf margins but there has been relatively little selection of named forms.
