Pic of the Day – Yucca torreyi

Yucca torreyi is one of the finest tree yuccas for the southeast US. Broad, blue-green, lance shaped foliage to 5′ long tops the stout stems for an architectural display. In spring, mature plants erupt with a dense spike of creamy white, thick textured flowers which often emerge red. Yucca flowers can be picked and quick fried for a nice mushroomy flavor. Expect happy plants to grow fairly quickly and ultimately reach about 15′ in the garden. This yucca is relatively tolerant of soils but is happiest in a sunny, well-drained spot.
